By Gary Smith

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Gary was born and bred in Derby in 1963. After gaining a City and Guilds Apprenticeship at Derby College, he went on to work as a fitting engineer in Derby's major train, plane, and automobile industries and is currently working at Rolls-Royce in the Experimental and Design Department. Gary has always had a great enthusiasm and skill for drawing, painting, and making, and was resolved to pursue his passion by enrolling in an Art Foundation course and further advancing his studies at Derby University, gaining a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Sustainable Design and Practice.
After achieving his qualifications, he worked as a part-time Foundation Art specialist lecturer in Sustainable Design at Derby College. While Gary works with all mediums, he is currently working in oils. He is inspired by the Renaissance period of art and its use of depth of colour and contrast between light and dark, captured in the paintings. The focus of his work is on what he finds intriguing about the details of a painting, which he then captures in his own interpretation.
Gary also introduces a touch of surrealism into his classical Renaissance style paintings, mainly in the background which inspires a sense of mystery. He is also attracted to abstract surrealism paintings, moving away from detailed realism forms, which evoke a sense of mystery moving beyond traditional representational art.
Work produced: Private commissions in oils, charcoal drawings, water colours, sculptures, and art installations.
